Mill Race Village Lecture Series

The Edmund Fitzgerald is the largest shipwreck in the Great Lakes, broken into pieces by a November gale in 1975.  29 men simply vanished in the storm, leading researchers to puzzle over the final moments that denied the sailors a Mayday call.
Ric Mixter has visited the wreck site in person, diving 550 feet down in a small submersible in 1994.  Since that time, he has interviewed investigators from the Coast Guard and Cousteau Society as well as the men who built the Fitz in Detroit.  His documentary is considered the best available on the subject with exclusive construction footage Mixter uncovered as well as his spellbinding video from down below.
Ric Mixter was given an award for 20 years of maritime preservation by the Association of Great Lakes Maritime History.  He has produced over 30 shows on local history for PBS and the Outdoor Channel and has appeared on the History and Discovery Channel as a shipwreck expert.  Energetic and animated, he has changed the way lecturers share history.
The lecture will be at the New School Church at Mill Race Historical Village, April 25th, 215 Griswold St, Northville at 7:00pm.  The lecture is free of charge although donations are accepted at the door to help defray costs.

ART OF THE FAMILY: Donald, Robert, Susan and William Perrish

Are artists born with creative talent or can anyone acquire artistic skills through external influences?

The Northville Art House presents ART OF THE FAMILY: Donald, Robert, Susan and William Perrish featuring paintings and sculptures from a family of award-winning artists. The exhibition answers the age-old question of nature versus nurture by demonstrating the existence of both innate talent and learned skills in shaping the artist.

Donald has been drawing and painting his entire life. He attended the College for Creative Studies and is a freelance artist involved with fine art, murals and architectural art design.

Robert studied art at University of Michigan. After 30 years in the commercial art business, his art has evolved from wildlife painting and sculpture into landscape and figure painting.

William, like his brothers, picked up drawing at an early age. Largely self-taught, he explores different mediums and subject matter, developing his skills with each project.

Susan grew up surrounded by music and art. Her mother is a talented watercolor artist and her father was a gifted woodworker. After she married Robert and raised a family, she found her artistic talent through drawing, specializing in soft pastel portraits.

“Over the years I longed for an artistic outlet, but the business of life always got in the way, leaving its pursuit as a ‘someday’ thing. Then, in the summer of 2013, I picked up a pencil and started to draw – first an eye, then a nose, another eye, and a mouth. The passion was immediate and life changing,” recalls Susan.

Regardless of their beginnings and how their artistry is expressed, one common trait among these artists is a sense of passion for art.

ART OF THE FAMILY opens with a public reception, sponsored by Mark Corbin of Raymond James, on Friday, April 6 from 6 – 9 pm and runs though Saturday, April 28 during Art House hours, Tuesday-Friday 12 - 5 p.m. and Saturday 12 - 4 p.m.

The Northville Art House is located at 215 W. Cady Street and is a facility of the Northville Arts Commission. Admission to Art House exhibits is free and open to the public. For information contact (248) 344-0497 or visit www.northvillearthouse.org.

Downtown Northville - Timeless...with a Twist

Imagine the timeless things you would have encountered as you strolled Downtown in 1950, like the smell of freshly baked bread wafting out the bakery on Main Street, bicycles with baskets on the handlebars, the mayor walking down the front steps of City Hall, kids on the sidewalks laughing with ice cream cones in hand, and your neighbors waving to you from Town Square on Friday evening as music fills the night air.

Take all of this tradition and hometown feel and add a little twist of…sophisticated art galleries, wine shops, the latest fashions, and the culinary delights you have come to expect as a discerning Downtown patron.

The best of all worlds, this is Downtown Northville.
