Featured Exhibit: Darcel Deneau “Detroit Exposed”
Opening Reception: October 3, 2008
from 6:00pm - 9:00pm

End of Day
|
Sherrus Gallery of Fine Art is honored to host the two-day only
exhibit of “Detroit Exposed” which features a new body of works by
well-known Michigan artist, Darcel Deneau. The artist will be
in the gallery during the opening reception on Friday, October 3rd
to meet the public and discuss her works. The reception is
open to the public and is a free event.
Aggressive brushstrokes bring an intense energy and life to
Darcel’s urban landscapes which focus on downtown Detroit.
Geometric patterns of windows, buildings and intersections depict
the stark beauty of the city which is peopled only by anonymous
automobiles – touches of rich color brings an underlying warmth to
the cityscapes.

Bright Lights Emerging
|
Gallery director, Sara Marlowe-Cholette says, “her use of
perspective and muted tones bring a realistic aura to her works,
truly capturing the heart and soul of Detroit.”
The tragic and still unsolved murder of her father and near
death of her mother propelled the artist to embrace her passion for
painting and complete her BFA from the College for Creative Studies
in 2002. Darcel painted the images of Detroit as a way of
coping with her grief and connecting to her childhood memories of
her father. These paintings have established Darcel as a
formidable artistic force in the metro area and earned a commission
for the artist for the poster artwork for the 28th Detroit
International Jazz Festival.

A New Perspective
|
“It has been accurately said that Darcel is creating an artistic
documentary of this period in Detroit’s history. Her work is
not only exceptionally well done from an artistic perspective – it
is important. Decades from now when people see Darcel’s work
they will “know” Detroit as we are experiencing it today. This
is going to be a brief but powerful exhibit – one that should not be
missed!” according to gallery owner, Sherri Mewha.
Darcel has exhibited her works in many group and solo shows; her
paintings can be found in numerous private and corporate
collections, including: Mack Avenue Records, Ernst & Young,
Gretchen Valade, University of Michigan, IAC Automotive and Visteon
Corporation.
