Sundays at Mill Race Village

Signs of Summer

It must be summer; Mill Race Village is open for the season!  To the uninitiated, the historic Village is a nineteenth-century jewel in Northville’s crown.  Seven buildings, ranging from approximately 1831 to the 1890’s, have carefully been moved from various parts of Northville to the scenic park land on Griswold Street; two more have been meticulously re-constructed with the aid of period photographs and plans.  A tenth structure, the 1850’s General Store, is being re-assembled in the Village, having been moved board-by-board from its original Main Street location.

Each Sunday afternoon, from mid-June to mid-October, the buildings are open for public viewing.  Costumed docents are on hand to inform visitors about the buildings, their contents, and about Northville’s past.  Many weekends, a working blacksmith demonstrates the craft, weavers and rug hookers ply their trades, and an occasional strolling musician may be found.  Special events are planned for July 4th and the Victorian Festival.

A visit to the Village is a delightful way to explore the past, take a pleasant stroll, and step back in time.  Mill Race Village is open to all, and there is no admission charge.  It’s located on Griswold, just east of downtown Northville, between Main Street and Eight Mile Road.  The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset; the buildings are open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

For more information, call The Northville Historical Society at 248-348-1845.

The Great Salem Train Wreck of 1907

Al Smitley loves history; he also loves baseball.  Combine the two, and you have a fascinating presentation about a major event in area history.  In “The Great Salem Train Wreck of 1907:  Joy & Despair in the Days of an all-Too-Common Tragedy,” Smitley describes how a train full of passengers, most expecting a delightful excursion, instead experienced a dreadful collision with a freight train, killing dozens.

Smitley is known to many as the serious-faced guy at The Northville District Library, and to others as the bare-footed “Toes” on the Northville Eclipse Vintage Base Ball Club.  With these varied interests, he has created a lively and informative program, illustrated with slides and spoken media quotes, read by members of the audience.  This was originally presented last year, the 100th anniversary of the collision; the program was so popular, dozens were turned away.  “It’s really good,” one attendee said.  “I feel like I have experienced a live Ken Burns documentary.”

This year’s reprise will be held at the church at Mill Race Village on the evening of July 22 at 7:00 p.m.  There is no admission charge, but donations to The Northville Historical Society are greatly appreciated.  Seating is limited, so those wishing to attend are prompted to reserve early.  For more information, or to make a reservation, call The Northville Historical Society at 248-348-1845.
